Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years for pain relief and the treatment of various medical conditions. It can be of great benefit in helping to complement conventional medicine, or in cases where western medicine either has not worked or is not well tolerated by the patient. Acupuncture is particularly helpful for treating painful conditions such as arthritis and back pain.
Acupuncture involves placing fine needles into specific points of the body. These points are selected individually for each patient and their specific condition. Traditional Chinese Medicine teaches that by stimulating these points, flows of energy allow the body to rebalance and heal itself. Modern studies have shown that acupuncture points have a higher proportion of nerve endings than the surrounding tissue, and that the placing of acupuncture needles stimulates the release of endorphins.
An acupuncture session lasts for 30-45 minutes. During this time your pet will be assessed, their condition discussed with you, and acupuncture needles placed in the appropriate points. The needles will stay in place for up to 20 minutes during which time we ask you to stay with your pet. The patient will often become quite relaxed and even sleepy during an acupuncture session, due to the release of natural endorphins. Most cases will require 3-4 sessions at weekly intervals before their condition resolves. Maintenance treamtents are then performed as often as required.
